At Mountain View Church of the Brethren, we hold to basic Christian doctrines that have anchored the faith across centuries – and we live them out together as a community marked by love, prayer, and truth.
Core Christian Doctrines
The Inspiration and Authority of Scripture
Christians believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. It serves as the ultimate and final authority for Christian faith, teaching, and daily life.
The Trinity
Christians are monotheists who believe in one God eternally existing in three distinct, co-equal, and co-eternal Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit.
The Deity and Humanity of Jesus Christ
This doctrine, known as Christology, emphasizes that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. Christians believe He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and performed miracles.
The Atonement and Resurrection
A core tenet of the faith is that Jesus died on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice for the sins of humanity. Three days later, He physically rose from the dead, conquering sin and death.
Salvation by Grace Through Faith
Salvation is a gift from God, not something earned through good works. Christians believe that humanity is inherently sinful and that forgiveness and eternal life are received solely through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit and His Ministry
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, residing in all believers from the moment of salvation. The Spirit acts as a comforter, guide, and empowers Christians to live holy lives and serve the church.
The Return of Christ
Christians believe in the literal, personal, and bodily return of Jesus Christ to earth. This event, often referred to as the Second Coming, will mark the final judgment and the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
Additional Beliefs
The Duty to Love
- We have a duty to love God, first and foremost, proven by our faithful service and obedience to Him.
- We have a duty to love one another as Christ loved us, forgiving, bearing with, and discipling each other.
- We have the collective duty to love and serve our neighbors.
Amazed at the Power of Prayer
We do not believe in exaggerating, which happens too often and discredits the church. Nevertheless, we are constantly amazed at the grace the Lord gives by His positive answers when we join in prayer as His Mountain View family.
Each Christian Has a Gift From the Holy Spirit
The Lord has assembled at Mountain View Church a rag-tag set of His people to serve each other with our unique Holy Spirit-given gifts – all for the common good and our specific calling by the Lord – without hype or distortion.
Our Duty to Live and Speak the Truth
Thus, we meet to learn His Word, grow in our relationship with Him, striving to do so daily, while living simply, peacefully, together, trying to be good citizens without compromising His Lordship.
